Sowore ‘Shot’ By Police During Abuja Protest

Armed policemen in Abuja have opened fire on Human Rights Activist, Omoyele Sowore during a protest to demand an end to insecurity in the country.

Sowore was allegedly shot in the right side of the stomach towards the hip by gun-wielding policemen drafted to the Unity Fountain.

Sowore was said to have been speaking with a detachment of police officers stationed at the public facility when an officer shot at the crowd.

Protesters had converged on the fountain at 8:30am. But the police allegedly denied them entry into the facility.

Sowore has been having a brush with law enforcement agents since 2020 when he was arrested and detained for months by the Department of State Services (DSS).

He had called for a nationwide protest but was arrested on the eve of the demonstration in August 2020.

A female police officer reportedly fired a teargas cannister at Mr Sowore who was at the Unity Fountain in Abuja for a protest.

Our correspondent gathered that he sustained gunshots injuries and has been rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Popular lawyer and right activist, Inibehe Effiong, confirmed the development on Twitter.
