TCN Commissions 300MVA Transformer in Abuja, Boosts Katampe Substation Capacity to 750MVA

Abuja, Nigeria — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a 300MVA 330/132kV power transformer at its Katampe Transmission Substation, significantly increasing the facility’s capacity from 450MVA to 750MVA.

The upgrade is expected to enhance electricity supply across Abuja and surrounding areas, with more power now available for the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to distribute to consumers.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony on Sunday, General Manager (Transmission), Abuja Region, Engr. Musa Shuaibu, said the project reflects TCN’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s power transmission infrastructure.

“The installation and commissioning of this transformer underscores our commitment to expanding the transmission network to support increased power delivery and improve grid stability,” he said.

Improved Power Supply and Grid Stability

The additional transformer capacity is designed to improve bulk power transmission, reduce pressure on existing infrastructure, and ensure more reliable electricity supply to distribution load centres.

TCN noted that the development will play a key role in enhancing grid efficiency and supporting growing energy demand in the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.

World Bank-Backed Project

The project was executed under the TCN–World Bank collaborative initiative, aimed at rehabilitating and expanding Nigeria’s transmission network as part of broader power sector reforms.

The initiative focuses on strengthening infrastructure to enable more efficient delivery of electricity nationwide.

The statement announcing the commissioning was signed by Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN.
