The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says rehabilitation works at the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation are progressing steadily and remain on schedule for completion in July 2026.
In a press statement on Tuesday, TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said the project, which commenced in March 2026, is being executed by the company’s contractor.
“Currently, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment is being installed, and two 60MVA power transformers have been delivered to replace the existing 30MVA units,” the statement read.
Upon completion, the substation’s capacity will increase by an additional 60MVA, significantly enhancing power transmission capability to the area.
To reduce the impact of the ongoing works on consumers, TCN had earlier deployed two mobile transformers. This has allowed Eko Electricity Distribution Company and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company to continue offtaking power for their customers, thereby preventing a total blackout during the rehabilitation period.
The statement noted that the major overhaul will increase the substation’s capability and eliminate the frequent breakdowns and downtime previously experienced with the old GIS equipment.
TCN acknowledged the inconvenience the project may be causing electricity customers and appealed for their understanding.
“We appeal to affected electricity consumers to bear with us, as the ongoing works are aimed at increasing the Amuwo Substation’s capacity to deliver long-term benefits for affected customers,” the statement said.
TCN reaffirmed its commitment to the continued expansion of transmission capacity nationwide to meet the growing demand for bulk electricity.
The rehabilitation of the Amuwo substation is part of broader efforts by TCN to strengthen and modernise Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure.
