The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has granted Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited (MESL) access to commence construction of two 330kV transmission bays at the Kainji Transmission Substation in Niger State, in a move aimed at boosting electricity evacuation capacity to the national grid.
The development was announced in a statement issued by TCN and signed by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs.
The site handover, conducted on Friday, 5 June 2026, officially authorises the commencement of the Kainji Switchyard Units 1G3 and 1G4 bay construction project, which will include civil, electrical, mechanical works, testing, commissioning, and other approved engineering activities.
Upon completion, the 220MW capacity infrastructure will enable the evacuation of power from two additional turbines (IG3 and IG4), each generating 110MW, at the Kainji Hydropower Plant.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Engr. Abdulkadir Gwaram Adamu, General Manager, Materials Control and Stores at TCN and Chairman of the Project Technical Committee, described the project as a key milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s power transmission network.
He noted that the development would enhance TCN’s ability to evacuate additional electricity generated by Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited into the national grid, describing the project as fully funded by MESL and at no cost to TCN.
The project is scheduled for completion in December 2026.
The Chief Technical Officer of Mainstream Energy Solutions Limited, Engr. Cleber Romao Grisi, expressed appreciation for the access approval and assured that the company would deliver the project within the agreed timeline.
Other officials present at the ceremony included senior engineers and managers from TCN and MESL, who are part of the technical coordination team overseeing the project implementation.
The development is expected to strengthen grid stability, improve power evacuation capacity, and support increased electricity generation from the Kainji hydropower station.
