The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has issued a formal statement correcting what it described as “misinformation” circulated by the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDP) regarding an outage at the Lekki Transmission Substation on August 26, 2026.
Contrary to EKEDP’s claim that TCN’s T11 transformer tripped unexpectedly, TCN clarified that the incident was caused by the simultaneous tripping of EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders at 4:34 a.m. due to overcurrent and earth fault. This fault triggered the inter-tripping of TCN’s TR1-60MVA 132/33kV transformer primary and secondary breakers, accompanied by “a heavy bang and smoke,” according to the company.
TCN’s maintenance crew responded promptly, rehabilitating the damaged secondary breaker and restoring both primary and secondary breakers later the same day. However, when EKEDP attempted to reclose its Oniru feeder, the same relay indications caused another trip, requiring further corrective work.
In its statement, TCN emphasized three key clarifications:
– “No outage occurred on TCN’s T11 transformer as claimed by EKEDP.”
– “The incident was strictly related to EKEDP’s Oniru 33kV and Agungi 33kV feeders.”
– “TCN’s technical team has been on-site, working assiduously to restore supply within the shortest possible time.”
The company assured electricity customers affected by the incident that efforts are ongoing to stabilize supply and strengthen the transmission network. “We regret any inconvenience caused and remain committed to building a more robust transmission system,” the management said.
