President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has vowed that the growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections will not cripple the legislative work of the National Assembly.
Akpabio said lawmakers were elected to serve for four years and would not abandon their constitutional duties because of political campaigns.
The Senate President spoke with journalists at the Presidential Wing of the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, following his meeting with critical stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District.
The meeting saw President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Akpabio and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, receive unanimous endorsements for their respective 2027 re-election bids.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio dismissed concerns that electioneering activities could slow down or paralyse the work of the National Assembly.
He maintained that politics and legislative duties were separate responsibilities that lawmakers could effectively combine.
“We are elected for four years and we are going to work for four years. Anybody that is walking on the tiny rope must be able to do the balancing act,” Akpabio said.
The Senate President said lawmakers could organise their campaign activities around their legislative schedules without sacrificing their duties to Nigerians.
“We are politicians and campaigns will start very soon. Campaigns can be fixed in the afternoons or evenings while we do our work in the mornings,” he said.
Akpabio also ruled out the possibility of the National Assembly grinding to a halt because of the 2027 campaigns, noting that lawmakers belong to different political parties and would not all be involved in campaign activities at the same time.
“It is not everybody that will go for campaign at the same time because we belong to different political parties. Nothing will affect legislation,” he insisted.
He assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would remain committed to its constitutional responsibility of making laws to address the needs and concerns of the people.
“We will continue to make laws to take care of the needs of the people. It has never affected the work of the parliament,” he said.
Akpabio’s comments come amid increasing political activities and preparations by parties and leading political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the Senate President maintained that the political battle ahead would not be allowed to disrupt the nation’s legislative machinery.
