A former governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tonye Cole, has withdrawn from the party’s governorship primary ahead of the 2027 elections.
Cole announced his withdrawal in a statement issued on Wednesday, saying the decision was taken in the interest of party unity, peace and stability within the Rivers State chapter of the APC.
The former governorship aspirant said his action followed consultations with members of his political team, supporters and key stakeholders after a recent meeting convened by the national leadership of the party.
According to him, discussions at the stakeholders’ meeting focused on the future of the APC in Rivers State and the need for members to present a united front ahead of the primaries and the 2027 general elections.
“As a committed democrat and firm believer in the supremacy of strong institutions, I have consistently advocated dialogue, reconciliation and unity among stakeholders within the Rivers APC,” he stated.
Cole said he decided to step down from the race in deference to the supremacy of the party and pledged his support to whoever emerges as the APC governorship candidate.
“I wish to formally announce my withdrawal from the race and pledge my full support and cooperation to whoever emerges as the party’s candidate at the conclusion of the primaries,” he said.
He described the decision as a product of “deep reflection, patriotism and unwavering commitment” to the progress of the APC and Rivers State.
Cole also expressed appreciation to party members, youths, women groups, elders and supporters who stood by him throughout his political consultations and campaigns.
Although stepping aside from the contest, he assured supporters that he remains committed to the ideals and aspirations that brought them together.
The APC chieftain further urged his supporters to remain calm, peaceful and loyal to the party leadership ahead of the 2027 elections.
He called on members of the party to work together to secure victory for President Bola Tinubu and all APC candidates in the forthcoming general elections.
