We Must Speak With One Voice’ — NUPRC, NMDPRA Pledge Unified Regulation Across Nigeria’s Oil Sector

Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have reaffirmed their commitment to a unified and coordinated regulatory framework to strengthen Nigeria’s petroleum industry.

This was disclosed on Wednesday when the Authority Chief Executive of NMDPRA, Mr. Rabiu Abdullahi Umar, paid a visit to the NUPRC headquarters in Abuja, where discussions focused on deepening collaboration and improving regulatory coherence across the oil and gas value chain.

Speaking during the engagement, the NUPRC Commission Chief Executive, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, emphasised the need for both regulators to align strategies in order to create a more stable and investment-friendly environment for operators.

She noted that both agencies share a common mandate under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), stressing that effective implementation requires coordinated action.

Eyesan pointed to the relative stability in fuel supply in recent months, despite global market pressures, as evidence that regulatory synergy between the two bodies is already yielding results.

“We have a shared responsibility for the health of the sector, and the industry performs best when we act in a coordinated and consistent manner,” she said.

On his part, the NMDPRA Authority Chief Executive, Mr. Rabiu Abdullahi Umar, described both institutions as critical partners in shaping Nigeria’s energy future, underscoring the importance of collaboration across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations.

Both regulators also acknowledged the role of the Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in creating an enabling environment for the sector through policy reforms and improved coordination across agencies.

The meeting highlights ongoing efforts to ensure seamless regulation across Nigeria’s petroleum industry, with a focus on efficiency, investor confidence, and long-term sector sustainability.
