FIFA has launched a full-scale investigation into the ugly scenes that erupted after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with players and officials from both countries now facing possible sanctions.

Possible punishments include fines, suspensions and other sanctions under FIFA’s Disciplinary Code.
The tension followed a fiercely contested final in which Argentina were reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card deep into stoppage time.
Spain eventually secured victory through Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner to reclaim the FIFA World Cup title.
As tempers flared after the match, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and members of both coaching crews were seen calming players, allowing Spain to eventually celebrate and lift the coveted trophy before a packed stadium.
