ABUJA — The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has issued a stern warning to staff, declaring that there will be “no compromise whatsoever” in the conduct of the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan gave the warning during an interactive session with INEC officials in Minna, Niger State, stressing that both Nigerians and the international community expect a credible and transparent electoral process.
“The whole world, not just Nigerians, is looking up to INEC… We must conduct the election in a highly professional manner,” he said.
He noted that global attention on Nigeria’s next elections is already high, revealing that several electoral bodies across Africa have indicated interest in observing the polls.
The INEC chairman urged staff to act as ambassadors of the commission, emphasizing integrity, impartiality and professionalism in carrying out their duties.
“You are our ambassadors and you cannot afford to fail,” he said.
Amupitan disclosed that the commission has begun strengthening its operational capacity through improvements in logistics, infrastructure and transportation to address shortcomings from previous elections.
“We do not want to repeat the mistakes of the past. My goal is to ensure that we improve on our performance continuously,” he added.
He also made it clear that while outstanding performance would be rewarded, misconduct would attract strict disciplinary action.
“There should be no compromise whatsoever… if there is any misconduct, there will be serious consequences,” he warned.
The INEC chairman further revealed that the commission is reviewing staff welfare packages nationwide to boost morale and enhance performance.
“When I assumed office, I discovered that the welfare package for INEC staff was among the lowest in the country,” he said, assuring that efforts are underway to improve conditions.
The visit forms part of INEC’s nationwide engagement as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections, scheduled for January 16 for presidential and National Assembly polls, and February 6 for governorship and state assemblies.
INEC has in recent months ramped up activities, including Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), operational reviews and stakeholder engagements, aimed at restoring public confidence and ensuring credible elections.
