2027: Sowore Declares Presidential Ambition, Seeks End To Old Political Order

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying Nigeria needs a complete departure from the country’s traditional political leadership.

Sowore, who was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 general election, made the declaration during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.

“I plan to contest the 2027 presidency. We have our primaries next week,” Sowore said.

The activist-turned-politician argued that many of the political leaders currently dominating Nigeria’s political space were responsible for the nation’s economic hardship, insecurity and rising poverty.

Responding to questions on why Nigerians should trust his vision ahead of other leading political figures, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde and Rotimi Amaechi, Sowore said the policies and ideas of the political elite had failed Nigerians.

According to him, the country has remained trapped in “poverty, insecurity, pain, sorrow and tears” because of years of poor leadership and governance.

Sowore maintained that his political movement represents a different direction focused on systemic reforms, accountability and people-oriented governance.

He added that Nigerians deserve a leadership model that prioritises the welfare of ordinary citizens and creates opportunities for young people.

The former presidential candidate has consistently presented himself as an alternative to both the ruling party and mainstream opposition, campaigning on governance reforms, social justice and youth inclusion in politics.
