The political future of Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, ahead of the 2027 governorship election remains uncertain following the failure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to give a clear position on his screening for the party’s May 21, 2026 primaries.
Fubara, who appeared before the APC screening committee on Sunday, spent less than 10 minutes at the venue before departing without addressing concerns over his political fate.
The governor declined to respond to questions from journalists after the exercise, repeatedly saying “no comment” when asked whether he had been cleared by the committee.
The silence surrounding the outcome of the exercise deepened speculations within political circles over the status of his participation in the party’s primary process.
Speaking with journalists shortly after Fubara’s departure, APC National Secretary and Secretary of the Screening Committee, Ajibola Basiru, also avoided giving a direct answer on whether the governor had successfully scaled the screening.
“I don’t know what you mean by screening. Anybody that appears before the screening committee, of course, is necessary as part of the process,” Basiru said.
He added that the committee would issue its official report after concluding interactions with all aspirants expected before it.
“After appearing before the screening committee, the screening committee will issue its report.
“As at now, the screening committee, having completed seeing everybody it is supposed to see, will now sit down and come out with the report of the screening. As of now, there is no report of the screening committee,” he stated.
The development has fuelled uncertainty over Fubara’s political future and intensified speculation over possible internal dynamics within the ruling party ahead of the primaries.
