CBN Holds Interest Rate at 26.5% as MPC Maintains Tight Monetary Policy to Curb Inflation

Abuja, Nigeria — The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has retained the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 26.5 percent following its 305th meeting held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, as policymakers maintain a tight stance to contain persistent inflationary pressures.

The decision reflects the Committee’s cautious approach to balancing price stability with emerging signs of macroeconomic adjustment in Africa’s largest economy.

Alongside the benchmark rate, the MPC also retained all key policy parameters, including the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) at 45 percent for commercial banks and 16 percent for merchant banks, as well as 75 percent for non-TSA public sector deposits.

The Standing Facilities Corridor was also maintained at +50 basis points for the upper lending window and -450 basis points for the lower corridor around the MPR.

The Committee noted that the sustained tight monetary policy stance remains necessary to anchor inflation expectations, stabilise exchange rate pressures, and manage excess liquidity in the financial system.

The high CRR, particularly on public sector deposits, continues to serve as a liquidity mop-up tool aimed at limiting inflationary spillovers from fiscal operations.

Analysts say the decision signals a “wait-and-see” posture by the CBN as it assesses the lagged impact of previous rate hikes implemented in 2024 and 2025, alongside ongoing fiscal and structural reforms by the Federal Government.

Inflation remains elevated despite marginal improvements in some food and core inflation components, reinforcing the case for maintaining restrictive monetary conditions.

This marks the second consecutive MPC meeting in 2026 where the apex bank has opted to hold rates steady after a prolonged cycle of aggressive tightening that pushed interest rates to historic highs.

The CBN is expected to release the full communique of the meeting, including voting details and economic outlook, while Governor Olayemi Cardoso is anticipated to brief the media on the policy direction in the coming days.

Market reaction to the decision is expected to remain muted, as analysts had widely anticipated a hold in line with ongoing economic uncertainty.
