Okocha’s 32-Year World Cup Magic Still Untouched as FIFA Reaffirms Historic Record

Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha remains the king of dribbling on the biggest stage of world football, with FIFA reaffirming that his long-standing World Cup record is yet to be broken more than three decades later.

The world football governing body confirmed that Okocha completed an astonishing 15 successful dribbles during Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against Italy at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States the highest number ever recorded by a player in a single World Cup match.

The former Super Eagles captain achieved the feat against a star-studded Italian side that included defensive greats Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta, underlining the magnitude of his achievement.

According to FIFA, no player has surpassed Okocha’s record despite the emergence of several elite dribblers over the years.

Former Brazil star Jairzinho and ex-England midfielder Paul Gascoigne share second place with 13 successful dribbles in a World Cup match.

FIFA’s recognition once again highlights Okocha’s place among football’s greatest entertainers and most gifted dribblers.

The global football body also noted that Argentine legend holds the record for the most successful dribbles in World Cup history with 125 across multiple tournaments, while recorded 53 successful dribbles during the 1986 World Cup — the highest in a single tournament.

For Nigerian football fans, however, Okocha’s unforgettable display against Italy remains a source of pride, with FIFA’s latest confirmation further cementing his status as one of the most skilful players ever to grace the World Cup stage.
