A motorist lost his life in a horrific road crash on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos after his Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) reportedly lost control and somersaulted several times.
The tragic accident occurred at Charity Bus Stop, inward Iyana Isolo, in the early hours of Friday, leaving the driver dead on the spot.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary findings revealed that the driver of a Honda Pilot SUV lost control of the vehicle for reasons yet to be determined, causing it to overturn repeatedly before coming to a halt.
The impact of the crash was devastating, leaving the victim trapped in the wreckage.
LASTMA officials on routine patrol, alongside officers from the Mosafejo Police Division, swiftly responded to the scene. The rescue team evacuated the victim from the mangled vehicle and managed traffic to prevent further accidents on the busy expressway.
Officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) later moved the deceased’s remains to a public mortuary, while the wrecked vehicle was handed over to the police for further investigation.
Authorities have launched a probe to determine the immediate and remote causes of the fatal accident.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and described the loss as painful and unfortunate.
He urged motorists to obey traffic regulations, maintain speed limits and avoid reckless driving, especially during late-night and early-morning journeys when visibility and alertness may be reduced.
Bakare-Oki warned against dangerous overtaking and excessive speeding, stressing that many road crashes are avoidable when drivers exercise caution.
“The sanctity and preservation of human life must remain paramount in the conduct of every road user. No journey is so urgent as to justify compromising safety,” he said.
The latest tragedy has again raised concerns over road safety on major highways in Lagos, as authorities continue to intensify campaigns for responsible driving to reduce avoidable deaths on the roads.
