The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced the commencement of its 2026 national essay competition, inviting Senior Secondary School Two (SS2) students across Nigeria to participate in a contest focused on renewable energy and electricity supply.
The competition, themed “The Role of Renewable Energy in Improving Electricity Supply in Nigeria,” is open to eligible students in both public and private secondary schools nationwide.
NERC said the initiative is aimed at promoting awareness, critical thinking, and innovation among young Nigerians on sustainable energy solutions and the future of the country’s power sector.
According to the commission, the competition officially opened on May 18, 2026, and will close on June 15, 2026, with submissions expected by 6:00 p.m. on the deadline date.
Participants are required to submit essays of approximately 1,000 words, including their full name, home and school addresses, email address, and contact phone number within the body of the essay. Entries must be sent as attachments via email to electricitychallenge@nerc.gov.ng.
The commission disclosed that attractive cash prizes will be awarded to the top three students, their teachers, and schools, while 10 additional students will receive consolation prizes.
NERC noted that the competition forms part of its broader efforts to engage young minds in conversations around sustainability, energy efficiency, and the development of Nigeria’s electricity sector.
