The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognising Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe as its National Chairman, describing the move as a victory for the rule of law and internal party democracy.
The party said INEC on Wednesday updated its records by removing the name of former National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, and other expelled officials, replacing him with Prof. Gombe.
In a statement issued by the SDP National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party said the electoral body had finally respected the party’s constitutional right to determine its leadership and manage its internal affairs.
According to the statement, the development has effectively brought an end to the leadership crisis that rocked the party and positioned it for greater stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“INEC has bowed to the autonomy of the SDP by recognising Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe as National Chairman of the party,” Aiyenigba stated.
The party maintained that the commission’s action was in line with judicial pronouncements affirming that political parties have the exclusive right to choose their leaders and regulate their internal affairs in accordance with their constitutions.
The SDP said it was particularly pleased that INEC had decided to respect what it described as the spirit of the law and democratic principles.
The party noted that with the leadership dispute now resolved, it would focus on strengthening its structures nationwide and preparing for future political contests.
It also expressed confidence in the prospects of its presidential candidate, Prince Adewole Adebayo, ahead of the 2027 elections.
The statement further urged INEC to extend the same level of respect and neutrality to all political parties, stressing that the electoral umpire must continue to act independently in the discharge of its responsibilities.
Aiyenigba said the party remains committed to deepening democracy, promoting good governance and providing Nigerians with a credible political alternative.
He added that the leadership under Prof. Gombe would continue to work towards building a stronger party capable of addressing the nation’s challenges, including poverty, insecurity and economic hardship.
“The National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, and members of the National Working Committee assure party members and Nigerians that the SDP will continue to promote democratic values and work in the overall interest of the nation,” the statement added.
