The National Examinations Council (NECO) has released the results of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), with a total of 186,291 candidates participating in the nationwide examination.
NECO also announced that candidates with deficiencies in Mathematics and English Studies will have another opportunity to make up for the shortfall, as the 2026 BECE re-sit examination has been fixed for July 22 and 23.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued in Minna by the Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani.
According to Sani, the candidates sat for examinations in 12 subjects and were drawn from the 36 states of the federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and five foreign countries.
He explained that the examination commenced on April 20 and ended successfully on April 30, 2026.
Sani said the release of the results followed the successful conclusion of the 2026 BECE Award Committee Meeting held at NECO headquarters in Minna, Niger State.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. (Mrs.) Folake Olatunji David, Director of Basic Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, who represented the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa.
He noted that the chairperson expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination and the processes leading to the release of the results.
The meeting was attended by secondary school principals from across the country as well as members of NECO management.
Sani further disclosed that the Award Committee approved July 22 and 23, 2026, for the conduct of the BECE re-sit examination in Mathematics and English Studies.
He explained that the re-sit examination is specifically designed for candidates with conditional deficiencies in either Mathematics, English Language, or both subjects.
According to him, the exercise will enable affected candidates to remedy their deficiencies and obtain the required certification for admission into Senior Secondary School One (SSS1) without having to repeat an academic year.
“The re-sit examination provides another opportunity for candidates to meet the requirements for progression into senior secondary education,” he stated.
