Tinubu Congratulates UK PM Burnham, Seeks Stronger Ties

ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rt. Hon. Andy Burnham on his emergence as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with London.

“Nigeria is ready to work closely with his administration in advancing shared priorities and addressing common global challenges,” the government said, signalling Abuja’s early engagement with the new UK leadership.

The message was conveyed in a statement issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.

In the statement, the President praised the United Kingdom’s “peaceful, orderly and seamless” transfer of power, describing it as a reflection of the strength of its democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.

Tinubu extended warm congratulations to Burnham on his assumption of office and expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria-UK relations.

He recalled his official visit to the United Kingdom in March 2026, noting that engagements with the previous administration laid a solid foundation for deeper cooperation between both countries.

The President expressed confidence that the new Prime Minister would consolidate on those gains, adding that Nigeria looks forward to expanding partnership and collaboration across key sectors.

Tinubu also signalled his readiness to engage Burnham at the earliest opportunity, both bilaterally and through multilateral platforms such as the Commonwealth, to advance shared interests.
