ABUJA — Nigeria has expressed condolences to Pakistan following a fire at a maternity ward in Islamabad that killed at least 14 newborn babies, as the country’s government ordered an investigation into the tragedy.
The Nigerian government conveyed its condolences to Pakistan on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in a statement signed by Oluwafemi Adeniyi, Spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abuja.
The fire occurred at the maternity ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended Nigeria’s sympathies to the Pakistani government and people, particularly the families who lost their children in the incident.
Nigeria also expressed concern for those injured in the fire and prayed for their speedy recovery.
The Nigerian government commended the prompt response of Pakistani authorities following the incident and noted the directive for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire.
In its message, Nigeria said it stood in solidarity with Pakistan during what it described as a difficult period.
The tragedy comes after the loss of newborns in a hospital environment, where families and medical personnel had gathered to receive and provide critical maternity care.
The Nigerian government prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved families and for the recovery of those injured.
