CAN Raises Alarm Over Conviction of Christian Woman in Borno

…Appeal filed as association demands protection of religious freedom

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised the alarm over the reported conviction and imprisonment of a Christian woman, identified in circulating reports as Lami Samuel Dawa, in Borno State.

The association expressed concern over reports that the case arose from circumstances involving the conversion of an adult woman to Christianity, warning that the development raises important questions about religious freedom and the protection of fundamental human rights.

CAN, however, said the precise facts and legal basis of the conviction were still being verified.

The association disclosed its position in a press statement issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026, and signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh.

According to CAN, an appeal has already been filed in the case, adding that it remains committed to allowing the judicial process to run its course.

The association stressed that the matter must be handled in accordance with the Constitution and the laws of the country.

It maintained that every Nigerian has the right to freely choose, change or practise a religion or belief without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment.

CAN, therefore, called on the relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of all parties involved in the case are protected and that justice is served.

The association also pledged to continue monitoring developments and engaging relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.

CAN speaks on religious freedom

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence among Nigerians of different religious backgrounds, the association emphasised the need to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of every citizen, irrespective of religious affiliation.

It said the reported case underscores the importance of safeguarding constitutional guarantees relating to religious freedom and ensuring that justice is administered in accordance with the law.

The association did not disclose further details about the proceedings, saying the facts and legal basis of the conviction were still being verified.

The appeal is expected to provide an avenue for further judicial consideration of the matter.
