Onitsha — The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has expressed concern over rising moral decline and social vices in society following the death of a 25-year-old female student in Onitsha in a suspected suicide incident.
The police said the deceased was discovered on June 18, 2026, under circumstances suggesting suicide, with a note reportedly recovered at the scene containing disturbing claims linked to a failed relationship and allegations of multiple abortions involving a man identified as “Chigozie.”
While confirming that investigations are ongoing, CP Orutugu described the incident as a reflection of deepening social and emotional challenges among young people, warning that urgent collective action is needed.
“This tragic development underscores the need for stronger parental guidance, emotional support systems, and moral upbringing for our youths,” the Police Commissioner said.
He urged parents and guardians to take greater responsibility for the emotional wellbeing and behavioural development of their children, stressing that many social problems could be reduced through closer family engagement and value-based upbringing.
Orutugu also called on schools, religious bodies, and community leaders to intensify mentorship and advocacy programmes aimed at promoting discipline, resilience, and positive values among young people.
The Police Commissioner directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a thorough and discreet investigation.
The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and addressing emerging social challenges affecting public safety.
