Political tension heightened in Bauchi on Thursday as a high-powered delegation of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), led by its National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, stormed the state amid growing speculation that Governor Bala Mohammed may be planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The APC delegation, which also included Kano State Governor Kabiru Abba Yusuf, proceeded directly to the Government House, where they held a closed-door meeting with the governor.
In attendance at the meeting were top state officials, including the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Y. Suleiman; the Secretary to the State Government, Aminu Hammayo; the Chief of Staff; and several members of the National Assembly.
Though details of the high-stakes meeting remained undisclosed, sources indicated that the visit may be linked to intensifying political manoeuvres surrounding Governor Mohammed’s alleged plan to switch allegiance to the ADC, following a recent visit by party leaders seeking to court him.
The meeting, which lasted about an hour, ended without any official briefing, as members of the APC delegation declined to address journalists. They were immediately escorted out of the Government House and driven to the airport for their return to Abuja.
Efforts to obtain the governor’s response proved abortive, as he also declined to comment.
With uncertainty mounting, attention is now firmly fixed on Thursday, April 2, when Governor Mohammed is widely expected to unveil his next political move.
