Tax audit interventions supported by the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) have generated $685.8 million in revenue for African countries in 2025, highlighting intensified efforts to boost domestic resource mobilisation across the continent.
The figure, drawn from ATAF’s 2025 Annual Report, represents collections from a total of $907.8 million in tax assessments carried out through audit support programmes in member countries.
The report underscores ATAF’s expanding role in strengthening tax administration systems, supporting fiscal reforms, and enhancing Africa’s participation in global tax policy discussions amid rising economic pressures.
According to the organisation, technical assistance was provided to 35 countries during the year, while 2,433 tax officials from 43 countries received specialised training to improve capacity in tax administration.
ATAF said its interventions spanned key areas including digital transformation, institutional strengthening, international tax cooperation, research, and efforts to curb illicit financial flows.
The report also highlighted the organisation’s growing influence in global tax governance, particularly in advocating African interests in discussions around digital taxation, tax transparency, and the proposed United Nations Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation.
Speaking on the report, ATAF Executive Secretary, Mary Baine, emphasised the urgency of strengthening domestic revenue systems across Africa.
“Domestic Resource Mobilisation is no longer optional for Africa; it is the foundation for sustainable development, economic resilience, and fiscal sovereignty,” she said.
Baine noted that with declining external financing and mounting fiscal pressures, African countries must modernise tax systems and improve collection efficiency to build resilient economies capable of funding development priorities.
ATAF reaffirmed its commitment to supporting member states through reforms and partnerships aimed at strengthening public finance systems and advancing sustainable development across the continent.
