NCC Moves to Update 26-Year-Old Telecom Policy for Digital Economy

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has concluded a two-day stakeholder workshop aimed at reviewing and updating Nigeria’s 26-year-old National Telecommunications Policy (NTP) 2000 to reflect current digital realities.

The workshop brought together telecom operators, government agencies, industry experts, and consumer groups to develop a modern, forward-looking policy framework capable of driving growth in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital economy.

In a statement issued after the session, the Commission called for broader collaboration, urging stakeholders to actively contribute to shaping the future of the telecommunications sector.

“Help us co-create a robust regulatory framework for Nigeria’s digital future,” the NCC said, inviting submissions from the public and industry players via stakeholders@ncc.gov.ng.

The existing policy, introduced in 2000, has guided the sector for over two decades despite significant technological advancements, including the expansion of mobile networks, broadband penetration, digital services, and the emergence of technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence.

Industry analysts say the review is long overdue and essential for addressing pressing challenges such as infrastructure deficits, quality of service concerns, digital inclusion, data protection, and investment in next-generation networks.

The NCC is expected to collate inputs from the workshop and public contributions before producing a draft policy for further stakeholder validation.

The initiative forms part of broader regulatory efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, enhance consumer protection, and position the country as a leading digital economy in Africa.
