AU Forum Pushes Results-Driven Democracy, Nigeria Backs Reforms

Addis Ababa — Nigeria has thrown its weight behind a results-driven approach to democratic governance, urging a shift from rhetoric to measurable outcomes at the High-Level Ministerial Forum on the Regional Partnership for Democracy (RPD) held alongside the African Union Summit.

At the forum, convened in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), policymakers and stakeholders emphasized that the credibility of democratic systems across Africa will increasingly depend on their ability to deliver tangible socio-economic benefits and sustain public trust.

Nigeria aligned with the forum’s central message that democratic resilience must be built proactively, not in response to crises, by strengthening institutions before they come under pressure.

The RPD framework, a regionally anchored initiative, focuses on reinforcing constitutionalism, the rule of law and accountability systems, while expanding inclusive governance—particularly for women and young people.

Deliberations also highlighted the importance of institutional resilience, structured political dialogue and governance models that directly connect public policy to economic and social outcomes.

Participants stressed that effective institutions must not only exist, but function efficiently and remain responsive to citizens’ needs, noting that public confidence in democracy is closely tied to performance and service delivery.

Nigeria reaffirmed that strengthening governance structures remains central to achieving long-term political stability, regional integration and sustainable development across the continent.

The forum further underscored the importance of African-led solutions and regional cooperation in addressing governance challenges, positioning the RPD as a preventive platform for democratic renewal.

Stakeholders concluded that sustaining democratic reforms will require coordinated action, practical implementation strategies and long-term partnerships focused on measurable impact rather than procedural compliance.
