Banditry: We’ll Do More To Support Police, Security Agencies – Makinde

Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, on Monday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with federal authorities and security agencies to tackle insecurity, declaring that the state government is ready to provide additional support to end banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Makinde made the pledge while receiving the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the South-West, DIG Adegoke Fayoade, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan, where he also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in parts of the state.

The governor specifically called on the Nigeria Police Force to intensify efforts towards rescuing students and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area, noting that the incident has left families and residents traumatised.

“Today marks exactly one month since the children and their teachers were abducted. We will continue to cooperate with the federal authorities, especially the Nigeria Police, to solve this problem,” Makinde said.

He commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Tunji Disu, for the support extended to Oyo State following the abduction, particularly the deployment of a helicopter and security personnel to aid rescue operations.

“Please convey to the Inspector-General of Police our deep appreciation. When the kidnapping in Oriire happened, the police deployed a helicopter and other resources. We are deeply grateful for the support we have received so far,” he stated.

The governor also praised the newly established Violent Crimes Unit of the Nigeria Police, describing it as a strategic initiative that has already delivered results in the state.

According to him, the unit recently rescued the sister and nephews of a former Minister of Power, demonstrating its effectiveness in combating violent crimes.

Makinde, however, urged the DIG to relay Oyo State’s growing concerns to the Inspector-General over persistent insecurity, especially banditry around communities bordering the Old Oyo National Park.

“Our people want an end to banditry, insurgency and kidnapping. Schools have been closed and residents in communities around the Old Oyo National Park cannot freely access their farms,” he lamented.

While acknowledging the operational challenges faced by security agencies, the governor said the state government understands the limitations posed by inadequate resources and the vast territory security personnel are required to cover.

“I know it is a difficult period for the police because resources are limited. Oyo State is bigger than at least 10 African countries. We understand the challenges, but our people want solutions,” he said.

Makinde assured security agencies of continued government support, adding that his administration remains open to recommendations that could strengthen security operations in the state.

“If there are things that you think we need to do more as a state government to better support the police, please let us know. We are ready to do more,” he added.

Earlier, DIG Adegoke Fayoade commended the Oyo State Government for its financial and logistical support to the Nigeria Police and other security agencies operating in the state.

He expressed regret over the abduction incident and assured residents that security agencies were working tirelessly to secure the release of the victims and ensure adequate protection of lives and property across the South-West region.

Fayoade disclosed that his team had been directed to intensify efforts aimed at guaranteeing the safe return of the abducted students and teachers while maintaining round-the-clock security across the zone.

Among those present at the meeting were the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde; Chief of Staff, Otunba (Dr.) Segun Ogunwuyi; Head of Service, Dr. (Mrs.) Adenike Fasina; Senior Executive Assistant to the Governor on General Duties, Chief Bayo Lawal; Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Abayomi Fagbenro; Executive Assistant on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya (rtd); Executive Adviser on Security Coordination, Major-General Lukman Omoniyi (rtd); and Special Adviser on Immigration and Homeland Security, ACG Segun Adegoke (rtd), among others.
