Bayelsa Police Arrest Man Over Alleged Burning Incident

Yenagoa, Bayelsa State — June 26, 2026 — The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a suspect, Ibobuminaten Oweifa, for allegedly setting a resident, Godgift Biko, ablaze over an accusation of wood theft in Okodi Community, Ogbia Local Government Area.

Police authorities confirmed the arrest on Friday, stating that the suspect is currently in custody while investigations continue.

The incident, which has triggered widespread outrage, reportedly occurred after the victim was accused of stealing pieces of wood within the community. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the victim had allegedly admitted to the act, apologised, and was beaten before the situation escalated.

The police condemned the act, stressing that no individual has the right to take the law into their own hands.

“The suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the command stated.

The victim, who sustained severe burn injuries, was rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The development has reignited concerns over jungle justice and extrajudicial actions, with stakeholders calling for stricter enforcement of the law and public awareness to prevent similar incidents.
