NUPRC, OGTAN Partner to Boost Oil, Gas Skills Retention

Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria (OGTAN) have agreed to deepen collaboration to strengthen workforce capacity and address skills retention challenges in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

The commitment was reaffirmed during a courtesy visit by OGTAN leadership to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the meeting, the Commission Chief Executive, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Amanorisewo Eyesan, highlighted the growing concern over talent migration and the need for deliberate strategies to retain skilled professionals.

“We must also address the issue of skills retention. The industry continues to face talent migration. Structured career development programmes, mentorship initiatives, and succession planning frameworks are necessary to retain institutional knowledge and develop future leaders,” she said.

Eyesan stressed that collaboration among key stakeholders—including regulators, professional bodies, trade unions, and training institutions—is critical to solving workforce challenges.

“Rather than working in isolation, stakeholders must collaborate to develop common standards, share best practices, and create industry-wide solutions. If we succeed, we will strengthen our workforce and enhance the competitiveness, resilience, and sustainability of the industry,” she added.

In his remarks, OGTAN National President, Mr. Chris Osarumwense, emphasised the importance of aligning training programmes with industry needs.

“By identifying the specific competencies required for various roles, training institutions can design curricula that are practical and industry-focused, ensuring learners acquire skills directly applicable in the workplace,” he said.

The partnership is expected to support the development of a more competent workforce, improve productivity, and sustain growth in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.
