Nigeria Air to Begin operations Before May 29- Avaiation Minister

0

The Federal Government has assured that the national carrier will begin operations before May 29, 2023, as the Nigeria Air project is 98 per cent completed.

The minister of aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika disclosed this in Abuja at the 10th National Aviation Stakeholders Forum 2023. He added that the successful implementation of the Aviation roadmap, would gulp about $14.166 billion.

Sirika added that local and international flights would commence soon following ongoing negotiations with the Ethiopian Airlines Group Consortium and the Federal Government of Nigeria ongoing.

According to him, negotiations are ongoing with the Ethiopian Airlines Group Consortium and the Federal Government of Nigeria. Next step: Federal Executive Council approval of the Full Business Case.

“Operation of local and international flights will commence soon. Before the end of this administration, before May 29, we will fly.
However, with the successful implementation of the roadmap projects, our overall goal is to grow the Aviation sectors contribution from the current 0.6% to 5% (approximately $14.166 billion)”, he added.

Sirika said that the International Air Transportation Association, IATA, in June 2020, reached a significant contribution to Nigeria’s economy by providing about 241, 000 direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians.

Speaking further, the minister said the benefits Nigeria stands to derive from the establishment of the national carrier are reduced capital flight from Nigeria; gain the optimal benefit of BASA and SAATM and develop an aviation hub.

The minister also hinted that the National carrier would adequately contribute to the Gross Domestic Product, GDP; facilitate hospitality and tourism; facilitate growth and development of the Nigerian Agricultural Sector and create jobs around the Agro-Cargo Terminals.

According to him, “the National carrier will contribute to the GDP; facilitate hospitality and tourism; facilitate growth and development of the Nigerian Agricultural Sector and create jobs around the Agro-Cargo Terminals.

“A study showcases the significant contribution of air transportation to the National economy, through providing 241,000 jobs (direct and indirect) and a contribution of $1.7 billion to the National economy.

“Furthermore, we have successfully debunked the gospel truth that aviation doubles every 15 years. Currently in Nigeria, the number of airports including those currently being developed has doubled, the passenger number has doubled, other entrepreneurships including catering and ground handling has blossomed, the number of airlines and jobs has multiplied”, he said.

Sirika also said that the aviation sector is challenged with: “Inadequate Safety, Security and Surveillance Equipment; Capacity development of unemployed trained professional Nigerian Aviators and Ageing and over-bloated workforce in the Aviation Agencies; High cost of funds and shrinking capital market.

“Poor and intolerable condition of airport facilities and equipment (long waiting and check-in times, time consuming security screening and baggage pickups; High debt profile of domestic airlines; Slow and Cumbersome Procurement Process; Lack of skilled High level Management personnel in Airlines.”

Train-Bus Collision: NSIB Seeks Partnership with LASEMA,NRC, Others

0

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has assured that it would release its report on the train and the Lagos State staff bus accident, which occurred at Ikeja area of the state earlier this month.

This is as the bureau has agreed to deepen its relationships with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on ways of enhancing safety in the rail and road sector.

Speaking during courtesy visits to the two organsiations in Lagos yesterday, Engr. Akin Olateru, the Director-General, NSIB, said that its investigators had begun investigation into the causal and contributory factors of the March 9, 2023 train and bus accident in Lagos.

He explained that its report, which would be made public, would also include safety recommendations to both parties on how a recurrence could be avoided in the future. A press statement by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Tunji Oketunbi revealed.

Speaking at LASEMA, Olateru regretted the accident, which claimed nine lives with colossal damage to the bus, but assured the Lagos State Government that its investigators would do a thorough job and come up with safety recommendations.

He, however, said that it does not impose blame on any party, rather, issue safety recommendations on how such accident could be prevented in the future.

He explained that NSIB has well-trained 45 investigators who are deep on investigation of rail and maritime serious incidents and accidents.

“We have 45 well-trained investigators who are well-trained in the United States, Singapore Academy and others. So, we do what we do well. It takes time to carry out investigation.

“But, for this, I don’t think it will take time because some of our investigators have already been trained on train and maritime investigation.

“All the accidents and serious incidents that we have investigated in the past, we made them public. There is no hiding of anything, but the thing is we don’t blame anyone. We have the causal and contributory factors that would tell you why the accident happened.”

The Director-General also sought partnership between NSIB and LASEMA on capacity building, training and exchange of idea.

Earlier in his presentation, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary, LASEPA, showed some slides on the train-bus accident and how its agency was able to minimise the casualties.

He explained that LASEPA like in the past was swift, effective and efficient in its response to the train-bus collision due to the various layers of information and action plan already established by the Lagos State Government.

According to him, its officials were at the scene of the accident within 10

According to him, its officials were at the scene of the accident within 10 minutes while rescue operations commenced immediately.

He sought for partnership with NSIB in the areas of training and acquisition of equipment to further increase safety in the sector.

He said: “We wish to partner with your organisation. Let’s partner effectively and efficiently. You can use your money to build us up. You won’t regret it. I pioneered LASEMA in 2005 due to the bomb blast of January 27, 2002, which occurred in Lagos.

“Emergency has evolved over the years, we are now introducing what we call timely warning because we want to be proactive and for us to do this, we need your organisation so that there can be a form of lesson learnt from any emergency that occurs. We are very happy that you are with us.”

At the NRC, Olateru also reiterated that the report on the accident would be issued to the public soon and explained that the new NSIB Act 2022 followed the due process before it was enacted and assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He explained that the essence of the new Act was to minimise all forms of road accidents in the country and safe more lives.

He said: “It is a decision of the Federal Government to do this. Before the passage of this Act, Nigerian Railway Corporation was the regulator, investigator and also the service provider.

“This is conflict of interest and in the wisdom of the Federal executive Council (FEC) in 2018, I made a presentation for the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for centralising all accident investigation in Nigeria in all modes of transportation.”

In his response, Engr. Fidet Okhiria, the Managing Director, NRC, expressed delight to work with NSIB.

He explained that the coming onboard of the bureau would improve safety of lives and equipment, while recurrence would also be prevented.

While lamenting the accident, Okhiria emphasised that the loss of lives would have been more catastrophic, but for the professional handling of the train driver.

According to him, no fewer than 1,000 passengers were onboard of the train on the day of the incident, stressing that if the train driver had applied the break immediately, the train would have derailed while more lives would have been lost.

He, however, said that the coming of NSIB to investigate train accident was not a threat to the organisation, rather, it would serve as a boost to the rail system in the country.

“The coming onboard of NSIB into the investigation of accidents in the rail sector will make the job of railway easier. It is a welcome development. We are willing to work with them. This is the direction of the government and we have to abide by it. We will work with them.

“How does it threaten us? The agency is not a threat to us in anyway; rather, we intend to work with them to make the rail sector safer and better for everyone. This is a law of the land and everyone must obey it,” he assured.

However, NSIB, LASEMA and NRC have agreed to set up a committee to work on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would further boost the relationship among the organisations.NSIB Act 2022

Cash Crunch: NLC Declares Nationwide Strike, Set to Picket CBN Branches

0

The President Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero has directed workers in the country to embark on indefinite strike beginning from Wednesday next week.

He also directed that affiliate unions constituting the Nigeria Labour Congress should also be on standby for picketing exercise across all branches of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN nationwide.
Ajaero gave the directive in Abuja while briefing journalists.
The directive followed an earlier ultimatum issued by the Central Working Committee members of the NLC last week criticising the cash swap policy of the Federal Government.

Ajaero said the decision to picket CBN branches become necessary, as the Federal Government and the CBN have not shown any commitment to address the situation.

He lamented that despite the Supreme Court order allowing the old N500 and N1000 notes to circulate with the new notes till December 31st this year, the situation appears to be getting worse as workers cannot access cash to pay fares to work, neither can they buy food for their families.

“Last week we gave an ultimatum for the review of the cash crunch bedeviling the country, but we have discovered to our dismay that as at this moment not much effort has been made to ameliorate the situation, government is still foot dragging on these issues we raised.

“Based on this, we met again this morning to review our position and resolved that by Wednesday next week all CBN branches will be picketed, workers are directed to stay at home too because people cannot eat, workers can no longer go to the office, we have been pushed to the wall, we have decided to take our destiny in our hands, we have mobilised our workers on this exercise,”Ajaero stated.

0

*** Declares His Emergence Will Bring Back The Glory Days Of Cross River State.

Sen. Sandy Onor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who is running for governor in the Cross Rivers State elections in 2023, has the support of the Concerned Group for Justice & Democracy (CONJAD), a pressure group that promotes democratic values and effective government.

The statement was made during a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja by the group’s Director-General, Mr. Emmanuel Eyaba.

Eyaba, a native of Cross River State, claims that CONJAD’s position on Onor is in the “overall best interest of Cross River State” despite being non-partisan in its support for competent leadership at all levels.

“At this juncture in the leadership trajectory of our dear state, we need to look beyond party interests and sentiments, and settle for someone with the necessary competency and character to lift Cross River from its current quagmire.

“Having carefully x-rayed all the governorship candidates of the various political parties, we are of a strong conviction that with the emergence of Sandy Onor as governor,Cross Rivers State will be restored to its glory days.

“We are not politicians, CONJAD is made up of professionals from cross Nigeria, including Cross River state ,who are resident in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), that seek better Governance and Democracy in Nigeria.

“As advocates of good leadership, part of our goal is to support anyone that can deliver the dividends of democracy, drive the economy and lift people from hunger, especially at the grass root.

“This is not about the sentiment of my party or not my party, but about the individual with the pedigree to deliver on basic infrastructure and job creation, especially for our teeming youths and secure the future of cross river people, and the time is now.

Eyaba added that ,“Don’t forget that Sandy Onor is senator representing the Central District of Cross River State and he has made massive impact on his people, especially through the provision of relevant infrastructure , including road intervention projects, community civic centers/town halls interventions as well as Education/school intervention project.

Also speaking at the event, the group’s head of Contact and Mobilization, Pauline Jonathan Idemudia ,said the group was working assiduously to ensure that massive votes were delivered to Sen. Onor across the state come March 11.

She therefore called on “Cross Riverians” , especially youths and women to shun voting along party lines and vote for the individual with the requisite antecedence to rescue the state.

“We want to influence voters directly for Senator Sandy Onor because we are sure when he gets into government, things will be better for our people and we want our youths and women to understand this clearly,” she added.

Group, G-10 Makes Case For Independent 10th National Assembly

0

***Insists On Competence, Federal Character, Other Considerations In Selection Of Principal Officials

Legislators alone should elect the 10th Assembly’s leadership, the legislative interest group of the National Assembly has said.

In addition, they thought that the qualifications, popularity, and federal character of the candidate should all be taken into consideration.

Speaking at the end of the event was the General Council Chair of the G-10 Parliamentary Advocacy Group (G-10 PAP), whose general council meeting was held over the weekend in Abuja.

While pointing out that a free legislative branch was in fact the real bastion of democracy and one of the strongest prerequisites for democracy to flourish, it criticized the Executive’s ongoing interference in the legislative branch’s operations.

In a communique signed by the trio of Sunny Anderson Osiebe, National Coordinator, Fred Itua and Nkem Anyata-Lafia, National Secretary and National Publicity Secretary respectively, which was released to pressmen after a high-powered meeting, the group also noted the following:

“That the two Chambers of the National Assembly must be allowed a space that is completely devoid of any interference by the Executive to elect the next President of the Senate, his Deputy, Speaker of the House of Representatives and his Deputy;

“That the next leaders of the 10th National Assembly must be individuals who understand the complexities of Nigeria and are willing to help in healing the anger and wounds brought about by our fault lines;

“That such next leaders must not be rubber stamps in the hands of anyone. This is, however, not advocating for an antagonist National Assembly, but the fact remains that Nigerians deserve a National Assembly that will stand on the side of the people whenever the need arises;

“That the selection of the next leaders of the National Assembly must reflect the Federal Character principle and the nation’s diversity. Every part of Nigeria must be carried along in the truest demonstration of our national diversity;

“That the next leaders of the National Assembly must be willing to subject requests from the Executive to critical scrutiny, reviews and collective decision. This is to avoid a situation where decisions, like the constant quests for loans, which have since become a daily routine of the present Administration and which have a direct impact on the nation at large, are left for a few lawmakers to decide.”

The group, which also called on lawmakers to take a dispassionate look at the nation’s electoral system and processes for the selection of the leaders by INEC, said it was sad to note that the 2023 General Elections fell far short of expectations and have, actually, initiated an ugly return to the dark days of tension and anxiety, which characterized such polls in our distant past when the reverse ought to have been the case.

The group, however, thanked all Nigerians for the maturity they exhibited before, during and after the Federal elections, while calling on all to ensure that the remaining polls are characterized by such disposition.
