Atiku To FG ,Recall Willing Ex-service Men, Women To Help Fight Insurgents

As Nigeria daily grapples with insecurity, the Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged federal government to recall ex-service men and women who are willing to return to service to help in the fight against insurgents.

He added that they should be mobilise to the field. Saying, the time has come for us to put in all our effort and stamp out this menace from our nation.”

Atiku gave the urged on Tuesday in a statement titled  “The Time For A Total War On Terror Is Now.”

The statement stated that, “The security situation in Nigeria is deteriorating rapidly and ordinary Nigerians are living in fear for their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Nowhere seems to be safe. Farms, markets, schools, homes, mosques, churches, and urban areas are all affected.

Terrorists are spreading their areas of operation beyond the Northeast, into far flung areas as far as Niger State in the North-Central. That is merely hours from our Federal Capital.”

He stressed that, “Now is the time for decisive leadership and I call on the Federal Government to consider recalling all ex-servicemen and women, who are willing to return to service, and take the fight to the insurgents, until they are rolled back and defeated.”

Atiku honted that ,as a former vice chairman of the National Security Council, I am aware that Nigeria has a sizeable population of military veterans, who are alive, and were trained locally and internationally, and it serves no purpose to allow these valuable national assets lie fallow when there is an existential threat to our nation. “

He continued, he said ” Call them up. Immediately. Mobilise them to the field. The time has come for us to put in all our effort and stamp out this menace from our nation.

“The men and women of Nigeria’s armed forces, whether serving or retired, who restored peace to Lebanon, Liberia, Sierra Leone and São Tomé and Príncipe can, and should be used to do the same in the motherland.”

“But they need arms and ammunition. It is incumbent on the federal government to develop a more efficient means of sourcing for weapons and delivering them to the troops at the battlefront.

“A situation where terrorists and criminals are better armed than our troops on the battlefront is intolerable.

We need to urgently improve the conditions of service of the men and women of our armed forces. And not just the government.

‘The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, working in concert with primary mortgage institutions, ought to offer the men and women of our armed forces special concessionary mortgage loans so they can own homes.

“The private sector should also be encouraged to offer discounted services to them in appreciation of their services.

There is no sacrifice greater than to lay down your life for the motherland.

“When our military is properly rewarded, they will fight more valiantly and gallantly.

“A nation that rewards courage is one that avoids outrage.”

Bill Gates Hired 97-Year-old Billionaire Lawyer Munger To Represent Him In His Divorce From Wife Melinda

0

Bill Gates has hired his 97-Year-old Billionaire Lawyer Munger to represent him in his divorce from his wife Melinda.

Recall that the Microsoft founder and his wife announced on Monday that they are divorcing after 27 years of marriage. In papers filed in Washington state, Melinda, 56, described their relationship as ‘irretrievably broken’ and the couple’s eldest daughter, 25-year-old Jennifer Gates, has spoken publicly on social media about the ‘challenging stretch’ the family recently endured.

No other details of why the pair are splitting have been given but the court papers reveal the pair did not have a prenuptial agreement in place when they married in 1994 – putting their $130billion fortune at the center of the split.

Bill and Melinda Gates have signed a separation contract – but what is it?

In their divorce filing, Bill and Melinda Gates make it clear that they have no prenuptial agreement – but the papers make repeated reference to a ‘separation contract’ which will divide up their estate.

A separation contract, or separation agreement, is a legally binding document drawn up by divorcing couples in advance of their split in which they agree how to split their lives – including child custody and access, debts and property.

It is governed by contract law, meaning that either party can sue the other for breach of contract if the agreement is broken.

Signing a separation contract allows a couple to divide their assets by mutual agreement, rather than having to go to court.

For the average couple, this means saving money in lawyers’ fees. For Bill and Melinda Gates, it avoids a lengthy, public process during which details about their private lives an assets may have been revealed.

However, a separation agreement is not necessarily final and a judge may overrule it if they feel the contract is unfair to the children involved, unfair to one of the partners, or that one partner has not fully disclosed their assets or earnings to be divvied up.

Lawyers are shocked there was no prenup, given Bill had already made his first billion dollars at the age of 31 in 1987 – the same year he met Melinda.

Now, their myriad assets are up for grabs.

Munger, 97, is not a family lawyer. His expertise is in business, philanthropy and real estate. He and Bill are friends from their time at Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett’s holding company which Bill served on the board of for 16 years and where Munger remains Vice Chairman.

Munger divorced once himself, in the 1950s, and lost all of his money in the process. He remarried and rebuilt his wealth.

Both Gates and Buffett have heaped high praise on him. Gates previously described him as the ‘broadest thinker he has ever met’.  Buffett said of him in the same 2017 Farnam Street interview: ‘He comes equipped for rationality… I would say that to try and typecast Charlie in terms of any other human that I can think of, no one would fit. He’s got his own mold.’

The couple met in 1987 – the same year Bill became the world’s youngest billionaire at the age of 31 – married in Hawaii in 1994, and have three children together: Jennifer, 25, Rory, 21, and Phoebe 18.

They also established the world’s largest charitable foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in 2000 which has contributed more than $50billion to causes including eradicating polio and malaria. The foundation has also been a major investor in coronavirus treatments.

In a joint statement posted to their Twitter accounts on Monday, the pair said their work with the foundation will continue but their marriage will not, adding: ‘We no longer feel we are able to grow as a couple in this next phase of our lives.’

While the couple have no prenup, it appears a lot of the work of dividing up their estate – which includes properties in five states, a private jet, an astonishing art collection and a fleet of luxury cars – has already been done, as their divorce papers repeatedly refer to a ‘separation contract’ which both have signed. The contract itself has not been made public.

The documents, which were obtained by DailyMail.com, came to light after the couple’s eldest daughter revealed their family has been going through a ‘challenging stretch of time’.

Jennifer Gates, 25, spoke out about the divorce announcement on Instagram on Monday afternoon, writing: ‘I’m still learning how to best support my own process and emotions as well as my family members at this time and am grateful for the space to do so.’

Jennifer is the oldest of Bill and Melinda’s three children, followed by 21-year-old son Rory and 18-year-old daughter Phoebe.

Bill and Melinda both posted the same joint statement about their divorce on Twitter, which read: ‘After a great deal of thought and a lot of work, we have made the decision to end our marriage.

‘Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue to work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives. We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.’

The announcement comes less than two weeks after they made their last public appearance, virtually, at a COVID event for healthcare workers

Gates co-founded Microsoft in 1975, almost 20 years before he married Melinda. The company made $1million in sales by 1978 and by 1987, he had become the world’s youngest ever billionaire. He met Melinda that year. They are pictured in 1998

Bill was already a billionaire he married Melinda in the early 1990s. He founded Microsoft in 1975 and became the world’s youngest billionaire in 1987 at the age of 31. He also met Melinda that year when she was working at the company where he served as CEO.

They married six years later but he deliberated over it and, according to previous interviews given by Melinda, even made a list of pros and cons for marriage on a whiteboard.

The reason behind their split after over a quarter-century remains a mystery but Melinda has previously suggested her husband had trouble balancing work and family.

In the divorce petition, which was filed in Superior Court of Washington – King County on Monday, Melinda asked the judge to dissolved the marriage ‘on the date stated in our separation contract’. The separation contract was not included in the filing so that date is unclear.

In the absence of the pre-nuptial agreement, the only agreement pertaining to the divorce is the separation contract.

Melinda did not ask for any spousal support but requested a trial date in April 2022. However it is likely the divorce will be settled without a trial.

The petition states that finances pertaining to the couple’s two children are addressed in the separation contract. The document was signed by both Bill and Melinda, as well as their attorneys.

Both Bill and Melinda hired powerhouse law firms to assist in the divorce. While Bill is represented by three lawyers from Munger Tolles & Olson – including Charles – Melinda is represented by a team of four New York based attorneys from two separate firms: Cohen Clair Lane Griefer Thorpe & Rottenstreich LLP and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP.

The Gates’ divorce, though one of the most expensive in history, is not the most expensive.

That title goes to Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder who split his $150billion fortune with his wife MacKenzie in 2019 after his affair with Lauren Sanchez was revealed.

They, unlike Bezos, are both part of The Giving Pledge – a collection of the world’s richest people who have all vowed to devote at least half of their fortunes to charity.

In 2000 they founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation – the most influential private foundation in the worth with an endowment work nearly $50billion.

Over the last year the foundation has focused on the development and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines around the world.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, announced this during plenary on Tuesday after the lawmakers resumed from a break to Mark the World Press Freedom Day.

Mamman Allays Fears of Electricity Tariff Hike

0

The Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman has dismissed rumours making round of a major hike in electricity tariff.

This was contained in a statement in Abuja , the minister said instead of significant hike in electricity tariff, Nigerians should expect an increase efficiency in the sector to reduce tariffs while managing headwinds from foreign exchange and inflation.

The clarification came amidst reports of possible major increase in the price of electricity that has dominated the public space.

Mamman, however, explained that the order issued by NERC on the 26th of April 2021 titled, “Notice of Minor and Extraordinary Review of Tariffs for Electricity Transmission and Distribution Companies” was a routine procedure.

He said the review planned by NERC is in accordance with Section 76 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005.

The statement reads in bits, “the tariff for customers on service bands D & E (customers being served less than an average of 12hrs of supply per day over a period of one month) remains subsidised in line with the policy direction of the federal government”.

The minister said Section 76 of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 provides clear guidelines for the periodic review of tariff (based on market data and submissions from licensees).
The guidelines include the provision that the Commission shall give notice of activities related to tariff “in the Official Gazette, and in one or more newspapers”.

“The Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) per NERCs regulation obtains inputs from operators in the market every 6 months to perform minor reviews and a major review is required every 5 years.

“Thus, as in January a minor review will occur in June. Given the timing for the extraordinary review has also elapsed, a review will occur for consideration in January 2021,” the statement said.

Mamman, said the Buhari administration remained faithful to the adopted resolutions from the Joint FGN-NLC/TUC Technical Committee on Electricity Tariffs which makes recommended for, “NERC to conduct an extraordinary review of the MYTO to further review factors and align them with current evolving realities.”

The reason this recommendation was posited by the Committee was to ensure that efficiencies could be derived from an extraordinary review to further reduce tariff.

He said government was committed to increasing supplied energy to the grid through rapid expansion of infrastructure through the various facilities for the sector either to the DISCOS under strict terms or to the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

“Furthermore, the National Mass Metering Program is on course to reduce losses. To date more than 500k meters have been delivered to DISCOs in phase 0 of the program in 5 months (this exceeds the progress done for the entire MAP scheme). We will eliminate the metering gap during the life of the administration,” the statement said.

It said the administration was not unaware of the challenges that Nigerians face which is why government has continued to subsidise the band D and E consumers to pre-September 2020 rates (55% of grid connected customers).

FG Extends NIN-SIM Linkage To 30th June

0

The Federal Government has approved the extension of the deadline for NIN-SIM data verification till 30th of June, 2021.

The extension came after a virtual meeting chaired by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami; Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof Adeolu Akande; the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NCC, Prof Umar Garba Dambatta; and the Director-General/CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Ikechukwu Adinde and Kayode Adegoke, spokespersons of NCC and the Ministry of Communication, confirmed this in a joint press statement made available to newsmen in Abuja .

They said extension of the deadline was based on a request by stakeholders who said postponing the exercise till June 30 will make it easier for all citizens and legal residents to register.

The statement reads in bits; “Significant progress has been made in the NIN-SIM verification process. For example, almost 54 Million people have obtained their NIN and this can translate to up to 190 Million mobile numbers, since empirical evidence suggests that each unique NIN maps to 3 to 4 phone lines. The much awaited Android enrolment system is now ready for deployment and this has the potential to significantly accelerate the speed and ease of enrolments”.

The statement said the telecom providers and other enrolment agents have also opened several centres across the country to make it easier for eligible citizens and residents to obtain and link their NINs.

Sections 27 and 29 of the National Identity Management Commission Act 2007 provides for the mandatory use of National Identity Number for accessing several government services.

This is similar to the use of Social Security Number and National Insurance Number for accessing services in the United States of America and the United Kingdom respectively.

The statement quoted minister as thanking Nigerians for their patience and compliance with the Federal Government’s directive on the NIN-SIM registration exercise.

“He again reiterated government’s commitment to continually taking decisions aimed at easing the pains of the citizens with regard to issues related to NIN and SIM registration”, it said.

Trees Felling In Abuja Attracts N100,000 Fine, Abdulazeez

0

The Federal Capital Territory Administration  (FCTA) through its Department of Parks and Recreation over the years weekend hinted that felling trees attract a fine of one hundred thousand Naira (N100,000) per tree.

The Director of the Department,Hajia Riskatu Abdulazeez gave this hint during a tour of some sites where blossoming flamboyant trees are planted within the city centre, over the weekend.

While adding that trees are not just planted for environmental protection alone,  but for beautification and aesthetic appeal.

According to her, it is an offence for residents to cut down trees planted in both private and public compounds without seeking permission from FCT Administration.

She, therefore, said that anyone caught cutting down grown up   trees both in private compound and in public places will pay a fine of N100,000 per tree.

Abdulazeez , however, noted that once trees planted in private houses have grown,  it has become a  public property that requires the permission of government before it can be removed.

She further stated that, after any tree is cut down with the permission of the Department, it is also mandatory that two trees are planted as replacement for each tree removed.

She further explained that even estate developers who remove public trees to pave ways for their projects,  are also compelled by laws to pay and  replant the trees.

According to her, ” Cutting down of trees is not allowed in the city, we have a penalty. The policy stipulates that if you plant a tree in your compound, once it is grown, it is no more your tree, it has become a public property.

” Before such trees are cut down,  the permission of the Department of Parks and Recreation must be sought. Anyone who cuts down tree illegaly,  depending on the size  and age of the tree , such person will pay a fine of N100,000 per tree and will also be compelled to plant a minimum of two trees as replacement.

” Even when permission is granted for anyone to legally remove trees, such trees must be replaced with two trees and if there is no space within the place where the trees were removed, the Department will provide a place where the trees can be planted.

” As for the housing developers who have been cutting down trees to pave ways for their construction, most of them apply for permission to remove trees and they are also made to pay before removing the trees”, Abdulazeez added.

She further stated that, government was making efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change on the city and won’t allow reckless actions that can further endanger life.

” Trees in general has enormous benefits and importance  for human being.  The oxygen we breath is from the trees, we breath out carbon dioxide which the trees use to live.

” Apart from the life the trees give us, it also douses noise it reduces glare and mitigates the effects of climate change. We are all feeling the effects of climate change , it is attributed to the rate at which we cut down trees, leading to deforestation.

Abdulazeez noted that nature has made human being to be dependent on trees for oxygen while the trees also depend on human being for carbon dioxide.
