CAN Demands Security Emergency as South-West Kidnappings, Banditry Escalate Nationwide

Akure, Ondo State — The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), South-West region, has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on security, following what it described as an alarming escalation of kidnappings, banditry, and violent crimes across the country.

The call was made in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by the CAN South-West Chairman, Bishop (Dr.) Barnabas Tunde Akin-Akinsanya, expressing “profound concern and deep anguish” over worsening insecurity in Oyo, Ekiti, Ondo, Lagos, and other parts of Nigeria.

“The recent incidents of abductions and attacks on innocent citizens, young and old, have further heightened fear, anxiety, and uncertainty among Nigerians,” the statement read.

CAN described the situation as a national tragedy that now threatens peace, economic stability, and social cohesion, urging government at all levels to move beyond statements and adopt extraordinary measures to address the crisis.

The group called for the immediate strengthening of Nigeria’s security architecture, including the deployment of modern surveillance technology, drones, intelligence systems, and rapid-response equipment to security agencies.

“The Federal Government should immediately review and strengthen the nation’s security framework and ensure security agencies are properly equipped for modern-day threats,” it added.

CAN further urged the Federal Government to explore international cooperation where necessary, noting that some criminal networks appear to operate with increasing sophistication.

“Given the nature of these threats, Nigeria must not hesitate to seek strategic technical and intelligence support from friendly nations,” the statement said, stressing that national security should transcend politics and pride.

The Christian body also renewed its call for the accelerated establishment of state police, describing it as critical to improving local intelligence and response to security threats.

On regional security, CAN urged South-West governors to intensify collaboration, strengthen surveillance systems, and support community-based intelligence gathering to protect vulnerable communities.

“The South-West can no longer afford complacency. Our forests, highways, farms, and border communities are increasingly exposed,” it warned.

The group also called on Christians and churches to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary night movements, and continue prayers for peace and national healing.
