Diesel Supply Surges 84% as Nigeria Records Strong Rise in Local Fuel Production

Abuja, June 2026 — Nigeria recorded a sharp improvement in petroleum product availability in May 2026, with Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) supply rising by 84.3 percent, driven entirely by domestic production, according to data released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).

The NMDPRA May 2026 Fact Sheet showed that diesel supply increased from 10.2 million litres per day in April to 18.8 million litres per day in May, with imports falling to zero as local refineries met full demand.

Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) supply also rose by 6.8 percent to 47.4 million litres per day, supported by increased domestic output and limited imports of 5.9 million litres per day.

Aviation fuel (ATK) supply grew by 38.5 percent to 3.6 million litres per day within the same period.

The regulator said the improvement reflected stronger domestic refining performance, particularly from the Dangote Refinery and modular refineries, which helped reduce reliance on imports and strengthen national stock levels.

Diesel consumption declined to 16.0 million litres per day, while petrol consumption fell to 46.3 million litres per day, creating a supply surplus that boosted national stock coverage.

Stock sufficiency rose to 16 days for petrol and 31 days for diesel at the end of May, according to the report.

The Dangote Refinery played a central role in the increased supply, operating at 101.25 percent capacity utilization during the month. It produced 44.7 million litres per day of petrol and 24.5 million litres per day of diesel, with significant volumes supplied to the domestic market.

Modular refineries, including WalterSmith, Aradel, and Edo refineries, contributed an average of 0.648 million litres per day of diesel.

All three state-owned refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna remained non-operational during the period.

The NMDPRA said the trend reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic refining capacity and improve fuel availability across the country.
