The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission is set to strengthen regional air transport with the inauguration of its Air Transport Economic Oversight Committee (ECATEOC) at a two-day meeting scheduled for July 2–3, 2026, in Lomé.
The committee, established under Supplementary Act A/SA.2/12/24, will officially begin operations as the regional body responsible for overseeing charges, taxes and fees in civil aviation across ECOWAS member states.
According to the Commission, the meeting will bring together senior aviation policymakers, regulators, industry stakeholders and development partners to chart a new course for a more affordable, competitive and efficient air transport system in West Africa.
Key discussions will focus on reducing the high cost of air travel, improving connectivity among ECOWAS countries, harmonising aviation regulations and strengthening the implementation of regional air transport policies.
The Commission said the inauguration of the committee marks another milestone in its drive to deepen regional integration and unlock greater economic opportunities through a more accessible and integrated aviation sector.
It added that the initiative aligns with the goals of the ECOWAS Vision 2050, which seeks to promote sustainable economic growth, regional cooperation and seamless movement of people and goods across West Africa.
