EFCC Storm Looms Over VDM, Deji Adeyanju as Petition Demands Probe of Funding Sources

Controversial social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has raised the alarm over an alleged move by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to invite him for questioning following a petition seeking an investigation into his finances and those of lawyer-activist Deji Adeyanju.

The petition, reportedly filed by legal practitioner Blessing Agbomhere, urged the anti-graft agency to probe the funding sources, financial transactions and asset acquisitions of both VDM and Adeyanju.

According to the petition, the EFCC should carry out a comprehensive investigation into their income streams and financial activities to ascertain whether their resources were lawfully earned and properly accounted for.

In a post shared on his Facebook and X accounts on Sunday, VDM disclosed details of the petition, alleging that it was part of a coordinated effort to place his activism and that of Adeyanju under intense scrutiny.

The outspoken activist claimed the move was politically motivated and designed to silence his criticism of government policies as well as his involvement in advocacy campaigns and protest activities across the country.

VDM further alleged that attempts were being made to portray their activism as suspiciously well-funded, with suggestions that their operations were “too organised,” thereby fuelling speculation about external sponsorship and even allegations bordering on terrorism financing.

He also claimed that the EFCC was preparing to summon him for questioning over the petition, although the anti-graft agency has yet to issue any official statement confirming such a move.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the EFCC nor Deji Adeyanju had publicly reacted to the allegations.

The development has, however, sparked fresh debate over transparency in activism funding, civic engagement and the growing intersection between social advocacy and financial accountability in Nigeria.
