The Rivers State Police Command has removed a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) from office following allegations of misconduct that sparked outrage on social media, vowing to carry out a thorough investigation and punish anyone found culpable.
The command, however, did not disclose the identity of the affected officer.
Confirming the development on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agaba, said the officer was immediately relieved of his duties pending the outcome of an impartial investigation.
She said the swift action demonstrates the command’s commitment to transparency, accountability and professionalism in handling disciplinary issues involving its personnel.
Agaba disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, expressed deep concern over the allegations and warned that the command would not tolerate misconduct, abuse of office or any act capable of eroding public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
According to her, the police boss has directed that a comprehensive and unbiased investigation be conducted to establish the facts surrounding the allegations.
“The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a publication currently circulating on various online platforms alleging misconduct involving a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the Command.
“In response to the allegations and in line with the Command’s commitment to transparency, accountability and professionalism, the officer concerned has been immediately removed from his position pending the outcome of a thorough and impartial investigation into the matter,” the statement said.
The command further assured residents that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken if the officer is found guilty after the investigation.
Adepoju reaffirmed the command’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, discipline and effective service delivery across the state.
He also commended members of the public for remaining vigilant and urged citizens to continue reporting cases of misconduct through appropriate channels.
“The Commissioner of Police further assured members of the public that the investigation will be conducted diligently, professionally and without bias.
“The Rivers State Police Command remains committed to upholding the highest standards of integrity, discipline and service delivery,” the statement added.
