FCTA Revives Fitness Walk, Targets Healthier, More Productive Workforce

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has revived its monthly fitness exercise to improve workers’ health, boost morale and strengthen productivity, with plans to introduce medical screenings, aerobics and cultural displays in subsequent editions.

The exercise, led by the Acting Head of the FCT Civil Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, attracted management officials, labour leaders and workers from various secretariats, departments and agencies.

Speaking at the maiden edition on Saturday, Nathan said the initiative was designed to promote physical and mental well-being while preparing civil servants for the administration’s demanding schedule in the final quarter of the year.

She urged workers to remain energetic and committed to delivering key government priorities in infrastructure, healthcare, education, transportation and sanitation.

“We are currently in the last quarter of the year, and we must remain proactive, stay energetic, and sustain our momentum,” she said.

Nathan explained that the programme would also help prepare staff for the project commissioning activities scheduled for December 2026.

She disclosed that the Education Secretariat would host the November edition, adding that the walking distance would be increased from the initial three kilometres to five kilometres and beyond.

According to her, future editions would feature medical check-ups, aerobics and cultural activities to encourage wider participation and promote a healthier workforce.

The Acting Head of Service also described the exercise as an opportunity to celebrate life and acknowledge the efforts of the President and the FCT Minister in advancing development in the territory.

Also speaking, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engineer Richard Yunana Dauda, commended the revival of the programme, noting that regular physical activity could help prevent health challenges associated with sedentary office work.

He stressed that physical, mental and emotional well-being were essential to effective service delivery.

“When you have a workforce that is healthy, you achieve much more,” Dauda said.

He added that the FCDA and other secretariats had indicated interest in hosting subsequent editions of the exercise.

The President of the Joint Unions Action Congress of FCTA/FCDA, Comrade Rifkatu Iortyer, also welcomed the initiative, urging workers to participate more actively in future sessions.

However, she called on the administration to complement the wellness programme with sustained action on workers’ welfare, particularly accommodation and transportation.

Iortyer said addressing these concerns alongside workplace health initiatives would help improve staff welfare and strengthen commitment to public service delivery.
