The Federal Government has intensified efforts to address Nigeria’s electricity metering deficit with the rollout of free meters under the Distribution Sector Recovery Program (DISREP), aimed at improving transparency and service delivery in the power sector.
The DISREP Metering Initiative, supported by the World Bank, is designed to provide electricity customers with meters at no cost, while strengthening energy accounting and reducing reliance on estimated billing across distribution companies (DisCos).
According to officials, the initiative forms a key part of broader reforms to enhance efficiency and accountability within Nigeria’s electricity distribution segment.
“DISREP meters and installation are free for eligible customers,” the programme stated, urging consumers to contact their respective electricity distribution companies to benefit from the scheme.
The meters are uniquely configured for each DisCo and carry distinct inscriptions that differentiate them from other metering interventions such as the Meter Asset Provider (MAP), National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP), and Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF).
Authorities also clarified that DISREP meters are non-transferable between distribution networks, ensuring proper allocation and monitoring within designated service areas.
The initiative is expected to significantly reduce billing disputes, improve customer confidence, and support ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s power sector.
