The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced that electricity consumers can access free meters under the Distribution Sector Recovery Program (DISREP), a Federal Government initiative aimed at closing Nigeria’s metering gap.
According to the Commission, the DISREP Metering Initiative—supported by the World Bank—is designed to improve energy accounting, eliminate estimated billing, and enhance transparency and service delivery across the electricity distribution sector.
NERC stated that the meters provided under the scheme are supplied and installed at no cost to customers, urging eligible consumers to visit their respective Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to benefit from the programme.
“The DISREP Metering Program is designed to improve energy accounting, reduce estimated billing, and enhance transparency,” the Commission noted.
The regulator further explained that DISREP meters are uniquely configured for each distribution company and carry distinct inscriptions to differentiate them from other metering interventions such as the Meter Asset Provider (MAP), National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP), and Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF).
It added that the meters are non-transferable between DisCos, ensuring proper tracking and accountability within the system.
The initiative is part of broader power sector reforms aimed at improving efficiency, restoring consumer confidence, and strengthening Nigeria’s electricity distribution network.
