The Federal Government has stepped up the war against the vandalisation of electricity infrastructure, with the Ministry of Power and the Nigeria Police Force agreeing to establish a joint task force to safeguard critical power assets across the country.
The move followed a courtesy visit by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where both parties resolved to strengthen collaboration to protect Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure from criminal attacks.
Tegbe, who was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary and other senior officials of the ministry, described the destruction of power installations as one of the biggest threats to ongoing reforms in the electricity sector.
He praised the Nigeria Police Force for its efforts under the leadership of the IGP and called for tighter surveillance of transmission and distribution facilities, stressing that protecting electricity infrastructure is critical to preserving government investments and improving power supply nationwide.
Responding, Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to securing critical national infrastructure, including electricity installations, promising that the Force would intensify efforts to arrest and prosecute vandals and other criminals targeting the power sector.
The police chief also pledged full support for the establishment of a joint task force with the Ministry of Power, noting that protecting electricity infrastructure and personnel remains vital to national development.
The meeting is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to strengthen inter-agency cooperation in tackling attacks on power facilities and supporting ongoing reforms aimed at delivering more reliable electricity under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
