ABUJA — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is advancing a broad reform agenda aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s diplomatic service, with a renewed focus on institutional efficiency, stakeholder collaboration and delivering measurable benefits to citizens.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued in Abuja by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, following a high-level engagement between the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, and a delegation of the Association of Foreign Relations Professionals of Nigeria (AFRPN).
The reform drive is focused on aligning Nigeria’s foreign policy with economic growth, investment promotion, national security and the protection of Nigerians abroad, while strengthening the institutional capacity of the Foreign Service.
Key measures include the restructuring of policy planning systems, revitalisation of institutional frameworks and the introduction of merit-based administrative processes aimed at restoring professionalism, transparency and operational efficiency.
Central to the strategy is deeper engagement with professional bodies such as AFRPN, whose pool of experienced diplomats is being positioned as a strategic asset for policy development and institutional strengthening.
The Ministry is also prioritising diplomatic training, mentorship and capacity building, alongside expanded policy research and strategic advisory services to support evidence-based decision-making in Nigeria’s foreign relations.
Efforts are underway to improve public understanding of the role of diplomacy in national development, with a view to strengthening institutional support and enhancing funding for foreign service operations. This includes exploring alternative financing mechanisms and engaging relevant government institutions to improve resource mobilisation.
Stakeholders within the diplomatic community are advocating additional reforms, including stronger mentorship frameworks involving retired diplomats, improved recruitment processes and the establishment of a Foreign Service Commission to enhance governance and professionalism.
The ongoing collaboration between the Ministry and foreign relations professionals reflects a broader strategy to build a modern, results-oriented diplomatic system capable of advancing Nigeria’s national interests in an increasingly competitive global environment.
