ABIDJAN — History was made in West African football diplomacy as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, Ambassador Nwaobiala Chukwuemeka Ezenwa, attended the WAFU-B U-20 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers draw as Guest of Honour.
The landmark moment unfolded at the WAFU-B Headquarters in Abidjan, where football administrators from across the sub-region gathered for the draw ahead of the 2027 U-20 AFCON to be hosted by Ghana.
Details of the event were confirmed by officials at the ceremony, who described the ambassador’s presence as a significant boost to Nigeria’s sports diplomacy efforts.
Stakeholders noted that the participation of a serving Nigerian envoy at such a technical football event underscores the Federal Government’s growing commitment to supporting sports development through diplomatic engagement.
“This is a proud moment for Nigeria and a clear sign of how diplomacy and sports can work together to strengthen regional ties,” a source at the event said.
The draw placed Nigeria’s Flying Eagles in Group B alongside Ghana, Burkina Faso and Togo, setting up a competitive path to qualification.
Hosts and defending champions Côte d’Ivoire head Group A with Niger Republic and Benin Republic.
Ambassador Nwaobiala, who assumed duty in Abidjan in June 2026, was said to have used the occasion to further reinforce bilateral relations between Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, while promoting collaboration in youth football development.
Analysts say the development could pave the way for deeper partnerships, including talent exchange, technical cooperation and increased opportunities for Nigerian players in the region.
The qualifiers are expected to commence in the coming months, with top teams advancing to the continental tournament.
Nigeria, one of Africa’s most successful youth football nations, will be aiming to navigate the tough group and secure qualification for the 2027 championship.
