ABUJA — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a 60MVA, 132/33kV mobile power transformer at its Damaturu Transmission Substation in Yobe State, significantly increasing electricity supply capacity in the area.
The development was announced in a statement issued by TCN and signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, noting that the transformer was successfully energised at 9:50 p.m. on July 16, 2026.
According to the company, the installation has raised the substation’s capacity from 120MVA to 180MVA, improving operational flexibility, enhancing system reliability, and providing backup during maintenance or outages.
TCN stated that the upgrade would enable the substation to handle increased load demand, ensuring more stable electricity supply to customers across Damaturu, Buni Yadi, Babangida, the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, and neighbouring communities.
“With this addition, more bulk electricity is now available to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) for onward distribution to its customers,” the statement said.
The project forms part of TCN’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)-funded initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s transmission network and improving the efficiency of bulk power delivery nationwide.
Industry observers say the upgrade is expected to reduce power disruptions and support economic activities in Yobe State, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare and education.
