Abuja, Nigeria — The High Commission of India in Nigeria has marked the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) in Abuja with a strong appeal for wider adoption of yoga as a tool for healthy ageing, mental wellness, and social harmony.
The event, held at the Velodrome of the National Stadium, brought together government officials, diplomats, members of the Indian community, students, and wellness enthusiasts under the global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria described yoga as a holistic practice that promotes physical strength, mental clarity, and emotional balance across all age groups.
“Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice. It is an invaluable gift to humankind from ancient India,” he said.
He explained that the International Day of Yoga was established following a United Nations General Assembly resolution adopted on December 11, 2014, after a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with June 21 designated annually for global observance. He also noted yoga’s inscription on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016.
According to him, this year’s theme underscores the importance of maintaining health and vitality in ageing populations through consistent yoga practice.
He described yoga as deriving from the Sanskrit word Yuj, meaning “to unite,” symbolising harmony between mind, body, and nature.
“Yoga is not just about exercise; it is a way to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature,” he added, referencing yoga guru B.K.S. Iyengar.
The envoy highlighted yoga’s relevance in modern society, stressing its role in reducing stress, improving focus, and promoting inner peace through breathing techniques, mindfulness, and physical movement.
He commended the National Sports Commission, corporate partners such as Indorama and African Industries Group, members of the diplomatic community, and participants for their support in hosting the event.
Dignitaries present included Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ambassador-designate Muhammad Saidu Dahiru; Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Dr. Shehu Dikko; and Director-General Dr. Bukola Olopade.
The International Day of Yoga is now observed in more than 190 countries, promoting yoga as a global practice for wellness, unity, and healthier living.
