Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, expressing confidence that the country’s democratic journey will deliver greater prosperity and development for all citizens.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor commended Nigerians for their unwavering commitment to democratic values and constitutional governance despite the challenges facing the nation.
Oborevwori described June 12 as a historic date that symbolizes the resilience, courage and determination of Nigerians in their struggle for democratic rule, stressing that the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes and activists must never be forgotten.
According to him, Democracy Day offers an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s progress, strengthen democratic institutions and renew their commitment to building a more united and prosperous country.
The governor maintained that democracy remains the best system of government because it guarantees citizens the right to participate in governance while promoting accountability, transparency and the rule of law.
He urged Nigerians to continue supporting democratic institutions and leaders at all levels, while embracing peace, tolerance and national unity as critical pillars for sustainable national development.
Oborevwori also expressed optimism about the country’s future, noting that ongoing reforms and the dedication of leaders across the federation would ultimately translate into tangible benefits for the people.
“On this Democracy Day, I congratulate all Nigerians and commend their steadfast belief in democratic governance. We must remain hopeful and united as a nation. With collective effort, patriotism and commitment to national development, greater days are certainly ahead for our country,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering more dividends of democracy to the people of Delta State through people-oriented policies, infrastructure projects and programmes under the MORE Agenda.
He said his administration would continue to prioritize initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and living standards of Deltans and other residents of the state.
Oborevwori further called on citizens to remain law-abiding and continue supporting government policies and programmes designed to promote peace, economic growth and sustainable development across Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.
