Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has congratulated Nigerians on the occasion of the nation’s 27th Democracy Day celebration, urging citizens to continue supporting good governance, peaceful coexistence and democratic values.
In his Democracy Day message, Governor Radda described June 12 as a historic date that reflects the collective determination of Nigerians to uphold freedom, justice and democratic governance.
He said the occasion serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by patriots and democracy activists whose struggles laid the foundation for the democratic system Nigerians enjoy today.
The governor paid glowing tribute to prominent sons of Katsina State who played significant roles in Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing their contributions as enduring legacies worthy of celebration.
He particularly honoured the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, noting that his courage, vision and unwavering commitment to national progress helped pave the way for Nigeria’s democratic transition.
Radda also remembered former President Muhammadu Buhari, praising his decades of service to the nation in both military and civilian capacities and his commitment to national unity, discipline and the rule of law.
The governor further celebrated the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, describing his tenure as one marked by respect for constitutional democracy, integrity and genuine concern for the welfare of Nigerians.
“Katsina is proud of these great Nigerians. They did not serve their state alone; they gave themselves fully to a nation they believed in. Their sacrifices remind us of what true leadership looks like, and we carry their legacies as a guide,” Radda said.
Governor Radda also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his long-standing commitment to democratic ideals, noting that the President was among the frontline figures who fought for the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria.
According to him, President Tinubu’s role in the pro-democracy struggle and his consistent advocacy for civil liberties, popular participation and the rule of law have left an indelible mark on the country’s democratic evolution.
The governor called on Nigerians to use the Democracy Day celebration as an opportunity to reflect on the significance of democracy and recommit themselves to the values of accountability, justice, fairness and respect for citizens’ rights.
He urged the people of Katsina State to continue supporting government policies and programmes aimed at improving their welfare and accelerating development across the state.
“Democracy is not just a system of government; it is a promise we make to one another as a people. On this day, let us renew that promise and work together to build a Katsina and a Nigeria that every citizen can be proud of,” he stressed.
Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering good governance and sustainable development, while calling for unity, peace and collective responsibility in building a stronger Katsina State and a better Nigeria.
