ABUJA — Chairman of the FCT Minister’s Press Corps, Hudu Yakubu of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), has secured another three-year term to lead the association.
Yakubu emerged unopposed at the 2026 election held on Friday, polling the required 37 votes to retain the chairmanship.
The election, which attracted 11 contestants for eight executive positions, followed weeks of preparations, including the sale of nomination forms, screening of aspirants, campaigns and manifesto presentations.
Declaring the results, Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Usman Katun Umar, congratulated the newly elected executives and urged members to bury their differences following the contest.
Umar cautioned members against bitterness, rancour, triumphalism and other actions capable of creating division within the Press Corps.
He urged those who won to be magnanimous in victory, while appealing to unsuccessful candidates to accept the outcome in good faith.
According to him, the real victory should be the unity, professionalism and progress of the FCT Minister’s Press Corps.
In his acceptance speech, Yakubu commended the Electoral Committee for conducting what he described as a credible and transparent election.
He said the committee had “raised the bar” for future elections of the Corps through its conduct of the process.
Yakubu also thanked members for their peaceful conduct throughout the electioneering period, stressing that the outcome should not divide the Corps.
“To all the candidates who contested, I want to assure us that there are no winners or losers in this election. The Press Corps has won,” he said.
The chairman promised to run an open-door administration and build on the unity already existing among members.
He pledged to prioritise the welfare and professional development of members, while urging everyone to support the new executive committee.
Other elected executives are Gbenga Omokhunu, Vice Chairman; Omeiza Ajayi, Secretary; Favour Ishember, Assistant Secretary; Wisdom Acka, Welfare/PRO; Sarah Negedu, Treasurer; Toyin Adebayo, Financial Secretary; and Abdullahi Mohammed Tanimu, Auditor.
The new executives are expected to be sworn in on August 31, 2026.
