Keyamo Unveils $500m Airport Revamp, Vows To Make Lagos Africa’s Aviation Capital

LAGOS – Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has revealed plans by the Federal Government to transform Lagos into Africa’s leading aviation hub, announcing a massive $500 million upgrade of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Speaking at the Invest Lagos 3.0 Summit, Keyamo said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu  was investing heavily in aviation infrastructure to attract global investors, boost economic growth and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global air transport market.

The summit, hosted by the Lagos State Government and chaired by Vice President , brought together investors, policymakers and industry leaders from across the world.

Keyamo disclosed that Lagos currently accounts for about 67 per cent of all international passenger traffic into Nigeria, making it the nation’s busiest and most strategic aviation gateway.

He said the Federal Government had secured approval for a $500 million modernization project at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, a development expected to transform the facility into a world-class airport within 22 months.

According to him, the project organized by Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu will significantly improve passenger experience, operational efficiency and the airport’s global competitiveness.

The minister also revealed plans to integrate rail transportation with airport terminals in Lagos, a move aimed at easing movement, reducing travel time and enhancing connectivity for passengers.

Keyamo further announced that Nigeria now boasts seven international airports following recent upgrades in Akwa Ibom and Maiduguri, describing the expansion as part of efforts to deepen aviation infrastructure nationwide.

He noted that the government had also made progress in resolving long-standing disputes involving private investors in the aviation sector, creating a more business-friendly environment and boosting investor confidence.

Calling on local and foreign investors to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the sector, Keyamo highlighted ongoing and proposed projects, including plans for a new airport along the Lekki corridor.

He maintained that with ongoing reforms, strategic investments and infrastructure expansion, Lagos is well on course to becoming the aviation and investment gateway of Africa.

The minister said the aviation sector remains a critical driver of economic development and a major pillar in the Federal Government’s vision of positioning Nigeria as a regional leader in trade, tourism and air transportation.
