ASABA – Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori , has expressed deep grief over the tragic train accident in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, which claimed four lives and left scores of passengers injured.
The governor described the incident as heartbreaking and a painful loss to the state, while extending condolences to the bereaved families.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Oborevwori said the state government had immediately activated emergency response measures to assist victims and ensure prompt medical attention for survivors.
He directed the Commissioner for Special Duties, alongside the chairmen of Ika South and Ika North-East local government councils, to move swiftly to the accident scene and coordinate rescue operations.
The governor also commended security agencies for their rapid response, noting that the Commissioner of Police personally visited the scene and deployed security personnel to protect passengers’ belongings and maintain order.
According to the statement, injured victims were promptly evacuated to nearby hospitals for treatment, while unhurt passengers were moved to safety. The remains of the deceased were deposited in the mortuary.
To ease the evacuation process, buses were immediately deployed to transport survivors and injured passengers from the accident scene.
Providing an update, Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Hon. Monday Odigwe, disclosed that 35 injured passengers were receiving treatment in three hospitals across the area.
He said 13 victims were admitted at Central Hospital, Agbor, 12 at General Hospital, Owa-Oyibu, while 10 others were receiving treatment at General Hospital, Owa-Alero.
Odigwe further revealed that arrangements had been concluded to lift the affected train from the tracks on Tuesday.
Governor Oborevwori prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased and asked God to grant their families the strength to bear the painful loss.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and safety of residents, assuring that the government would continue to monitor the situation and provide necessary support to those receiving treatment.
