ABUJA — The Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) played a central oversight role in the ongoing oil licensing round, reinforcing transparency and accountability in the allocation of petroleum assets.
At the Commercial Bid Conference for the Nigeria 2025 Licensing Round, the Commission Chief Executive said NEITI actively monitored key stages of the process, including bid evaluation and opening, to ensure compliance with established standards.
“NEITI’s involvement demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to internationally recognised standards of transparency and accountability in natural resource management,” he said.
The licensing round, which attracted interest from about 300 companies, has been designed to align with global best practices, with clear guidelines governing participation, evaluation and bid selection.
According to the Commission, transparency was embedded from the outset through published criteria, a dedicated licensing portal, pre-bid engagements and continuous stakeholder communication.
Industry observers note that NEITI’s presence provides independent scrutiny, helping to build investor confidence and strengthen public trust in the management of Nigeria’s oil and gas resources.
The Commission emphasised that the allocation of petroleum rights is a matter of public trust, requiring processes that can withstand both domestic and international scrutiny.
Analysts say the transparent approach could improve Nigeria’s competitiveness for investment and signal a shift toward more accountable governance in the extractive sector.
The licensing round is expected to conclude with the emergence of winning bidders, subject to strict compliance with post-award conditions.
